Love the peek into your process! I’m a note taker so there’s just a mess of post-it’s scattered about… on paper and in my brain. I’ve been pre-crastinating SubStack stuff by getting my notes and process more organized; intending to use SubStack notes as I develop small ideas and/or kill them quickly, then topics where I have a lot of notes become longer form posts.

So I’m doing a lot of work that isn’t putting words on the page or pressing publish 😂

I love that term, pre-crastinating! Though I think writing is more than just words on a page (we are not data entry people or typists, we are writers, after all). However you can access your ideas is fair grounds for the writing life.

Happy to share process if it helps another writer cut through all the much-more-tidy advice out there. Substack Notes is an interesting space to try things out, good luck!

“Writing is more than just words on a page” - for sure! I record voice memos while I’m in the garden, kind of live narrating / stream-of-consciousness dumping the stuff that becomes the bedrock of field notes and reflections. Transcript work is a whole thing unto itself, but the mental bar is lower because it feels closer to “editing” than capital-W “Writing” - whatever the hell that is.

these are great examples of all the many legit ways that writers approach their drafts... and I am reminded to find ways to save those writing-while-gardening thoughts, too!
